Hey guys. It's been quite awhile since I've been on this site,
but I really need some good advice, and I know this is the
best place to get good feedback. My boxer, Sable, came into
heat today. We don't have a fenced-in yard so we have a runner
set up outside for her for when she goes out to use the bathroom
(she's a runner, can't just turn her loose) but we can't put her on it
'till she's out of season because our neighbors have male dogs. Our
only choice for today was to put her up in an outbuilding behind our
house until we can figure out a way to keep her inside without ruining
our new house. I can't stand the thoughts of keeping her locked in like
this. We opened the one window in the building, and set up a fan to
help with the heat, and put down three or four blankets for her to lay
on so she doesn't have to sleep on the concrete, but I still feel like I'm
abusing her. She's been kept indoors her whole life, and it's killing her
AND us to keep her shut in like this. I read somewhere on here once
before that someone had used boxer shorts for their dog when they
came in heat. I thought about buying diapers to put on her, but I think
baby diapers would be too small, but I don't think adult diapers would fit
around her waist without falling down every time she moved. Please guys,
if you have any suggestions....I'm open to them. No matter what they are.

I would go to Petsmart and pickup what Angie suggested.

This is reason #1 I didn't get a female dog :) that and I have a wife and 2 daughter. (my life is already hell)

Why do I have a feeling Champ is headed to Alabama?

LOL

I would suggest the same thing as the others. Do you not have a crate you can keep her in inside your house? You can find one at Wal-Mart that she should fit in for $40 or $50. That's what we keep our female boxer in.

You can use #6 or weight size 36 lbs or more regular human baby diapers..they are cheaper than anything you will find at Pet Smart..just cut a whole in them for the tail to stick out...

And get her fixed..after she goes out of season...

Well I sure wouldnt leave her in an outhouse!! When my female went into heat (boxer also) we just put her in her crate and when we took her outside she was on leash and under a very watchfull eye!! If you have no intention of breeding I would get her fixed for health reasons!! She could poosibly get bred and you would have to take care of an unwanted litter!! She could also get cancer in her teets or even possibly go through a false pregnancy!!

If you dont want her to get bloood all over your house then get her fixed!! Its the best thing for you and her! :)

Family of five....here's to you poor guy...all that estrogen in
your house must be hell for you some days....lol

Lyla has had one heat too...but I dealt with it by doubling up towels
and putting them in her favorite spots to sit. Luckily, we have mostly
laminate flooring, so I kept the mop moist all day....lol

Lyla wouldn't leave anything on her bum..I tried the boys underwear.

Not to make you feel bad, but I think you should deal with this in a
different way. Your poor dog shouldn't have to be outcasted due to
this. She doesn't realize the reason for the sudden change. Is your
house carpeted? Get a good stain remover...put drop sheets down.
There must be a better solution. Lyla only went through sparatic
times throughout the day that the droplets of blood were heavy.
I don't know, but I hope you find some good advice here.

I have to say what the others said - crate or get pads at Petsmart, tell the clerk and they can show you the right thing. If you didn't want to get your HOUSE messed up maybe you shouldn't have a dog!?
It isn't HER fault you didn't have her spayed and now she is in heat. You're putting her at risk for injury and unwanted pregnancy by leaving her outside. If she's your "baby" then get her in the precious house and take care of her!
