Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I have a seven month old APBT who is, like most Pit Bulls, very friendly. In fact, he's a little too friendly. He does not jump up on me, or mouth me and IF he does once I tell him "off" or "no" he stops. However, when he meets new people, he constantly jumps all over them and mouths their hands. He is so excited to see these people, that he doesn't listen to me and he definitely does not listen to them. He even does this while we're walking outside, he just jumps up on random people. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Oh, btw, he knows all basic commands and then some.

Thank you, but, as for the first link, I have tried that and still try that every time Boss sees someone new but it really only works for that initial "sit." I find, he will only sit for a very brief period of time and then resume with jumping up. Another thing is, how do I stop him from jumping on people that are merely walking by us? They're aren't even stopping to say hello. He just sees them tries to run to them (which pulls me when we're walking) and then jumps. As for the second link, he does not jump on me, he knows that it's bad. Should I tell everyone that meets him to stick their leg out at him?

I heard that completely ignoring the dog until he settles may work. Has anyone tried that?

You have to be forceful and firm, on the leash you will have more control, quick jerk on the leash.. OFF...., as they go to jump up.

Jumping up at ppl on the streets is bad, but I guess we have all been there. If you have ur dog trained to heal or close then this command should stop them pulling off in all directions. Try keeping your dog interested in your when ur out walking, whether it be with a treat or a hi pitch silly voice, a toy, use a command like close as u set off, sit at roads, then use 'close' as u set off again.

I know its not easy, Roxy still reverts to wanting to lick n kiss ne1! she's a lot better, also I don't allow other ppl to stroke my dog, only family and friends. I've seen a dog that loved everybody suddenly went to bite some1 trying to stroke him.

hope that helped or even made sense.

Good luck u'll get there, but u need to limit his freedom as a dog.

Ok, I will try that. It is very hard for me to keep him interested in me while on walks, the only thing that really gets him, is playing with a stick, but, he unfortunately must wear a muzzle out in public now. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. I know how wonderful he is, but I'm the only one who really gets to see it, because he's such a spaz around other people. Hopefully he will make progress :)

Try carrying a squirting bottle, now when my dog sees it, he knows what he was about to do was wrong, and usually wont try the rest of the day. Just give him a squirt in the face when he is about to jump. He is also only 7 months old. I think wearing a muzzle would be a last resort, it does not do the breed in general any justice.

All Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes must be muzzled and leashed at all times. It's the law. Other wise I'll go to jail for six months and get a hefty fine. Obviously I wouldn't muzzle him if I didn't have to, I think it's cruel. If anything, the muzzle makes him behave worse because he hates it so much.

Thank god it's not the law in Pa. I would hate to put a muzzle on CC. I just broke CC of jumping on People. Every time she looks as though she is going to jump I call her Over and make her sit (You need alot of treats) and treat her When she sits. Also when she went to jump on me I crossed my arms and stare at the sky (you'll kinda silly) but it worked!

I live in Mississauga, ON. Not the greatest place to own a Pit Bull anymore. The majority of people I come across, give me a disgusted look when I tell them he's a Pit Bull. It's pretty sad how ignorant most people are.
