Patch got really sick - scared the life out of me!

My husband and I drove up to Coffs Harbour on friday night (6 hours north from where we live, in Sydney), and arrived at about midnight. We went to stay with my husband's parents for the weekend.
Patch was really good in the car, god bless him.
He got along well with Gizmo (my in-laws dog, cross sh1tzu/maltese terrior) and all was fine.
i didn't sleep the first night because i was so worried he was scared outside in a new environment...
Anyway, on saturday morning i noticed he had diarrhoea. he continued to have the runs all day saturday, then at about 6pm he vomited really bad...(in the living room too!) i was SO scared. he had the shakes, and must have done diarrhoea at least 6 times.
So i rang the vet up there, and he said it sounded like Patch caught a stomach bug or virus! he told me to not give him any food (he wasn't eating anyway) and to make sure he drank lots of water.
To cut a long story short, he slept with us saturday night.. and i had to nurse him ALL night because i had to constantly take him outside (with the runs) and he was vomitting bile.
He slept in my arms all night - it was so horrible... my heart melted for him.
I even cried, i was so upset.
Anyway.. he got better yesterday, and is back to eating as usual. thank goodness.
It was such a fright.
I can imagine how im going to be when i have kids!!!!

so does anybody know what might have caused this?? I don't think it was anything he ate because he vomited about 12 hours after his first diarrhoea. Could it be nerves??? anxiousness?

Sometimes when dogs get stressed they will develop diarrhea. Between the car ride and being in a different place he probably got scared. Glad he is doing better.
i initially thought it was car sickness... but he was fine in the car and he got sick the following morning.
could he get diarrhoea that bad from being in a different environment? even though my husband and i were with him most of the time??
I feel so bad that we might have been the cause of it all!!!

It is not car sickness but the anxiety and stress from riding in a car. He was not sure what was happening, if he is coming back, where he is going. It stresses them out and wham, diarrhea. Think to time that you got scared - going to the doctor, taking a test, etc. It makes you want to head to the bathroom and that is what happens to dogs too.
even the vomitting? the poor baby... i feel bad now!
should i expect this every time we go away???
It could happen, but I would start conditioning her to ride in the car. Just take him out up and down the street at first and than for a 10 minute drive, etc. increasing the time each time. The important thing is for him to recognize that each time he goes out, he comes back home. This way he will not be as scared to leave and get him use to the sounds of traffic and the car. :D
