yeah i am figuring soft food for him and good meds he just has bad teeth thank god we have insurence to take care of it
of course he thinks he is going to be in pain forever

My hubby had to have 2 pulled on one side in the back a few years ago... he was pretty miserable for a week. Kept forgetting and trying to chew there. :( Smoothies are the best of the best after a tooth pull! Get a big ol bag of frozen fresh fruit (costco carries em) toss it in a blender with a bit of vanilla yogurt, and serve. Hubby loved it and he didn't have to chew.

Expect some serious welling! My husband also had really bad teeth - and had all of his pulled a few years ago. They had to do his over the course of 6 months to a year because of the swelling. He bruised and swelled extreamly badly when they did his uppers - I hate to say this - but I laughed at him because he looked like a monkey.

Expect him to need a few pillows at night to keep him semi-upright for drainage and swelling. The more he stays upright - the less he will swell. Alternate between hot and cold. Tylenol for pain. Avoid too much dairy products (makes things phlemmy). Also - if he teeth are very bad - and rotted - ask about getting some anti-biotics right away. One of the 3 oral surgeons my husband saw for his decided he didn't need anti-biotics - and hubby ended up well on his way to a case of gangreen (sp?) in just 2 days. Ended up taking him to our family doctor when the oral surgeon he saw that time refused to perscribe anything or even see him when we questioned the smell and the black gum line/cheek. Family doc gave him a antibiotic shot - and 500 mgs twice a day of oral antibiotics the infection was that bad (and she gaged a bit when she saw/smelled the infection- it was that bad). :pukeright:

Expect to sacrafice a few bath towels for night time drainage/drooling.

Lots of cold water, and smooth cold things to eat will be good. Check your local pharmecy if they sell something called Arginaid. It is a special protien drink that helps wounds heal. It will help him feel better sooner, and will help him replace the blood lost following surgery. It tastes rather awful on it's own, but you can mix it with 7-up or Sprite to make it taste better. It is a little on the pricey side - but is some good stuff and worth it if you can get it. You will have to talk to the Pharmasist or the Pharm. Tech about it.

Ask the oral surgeon about what kind of mouth rinse he can use (I dont remember if my husband was able to use over the counter mouth wash or if it was a perscription type of one).

Dont let him drink from a straw or smoke. He will NOT be happy with a mouth full of dry sockets!

Once the sockets are healed - be sure he brushes his mouth, tongue, and gums! They sometime think they dont have bad breath because they dont have teeth - I have to keep reminding my husband that the germs that cause bad breath are on his tongue - not his teeth. Also - if he will be wearing dentures- he will still have to care for those as if they were real teeth, and finding an adhesive that he likes - might be hit and miss for awhile. My husbands dentures dont fit right - so he doesn't wear them :? But even with no teeth what-so-ever he still eats steak, chips, and whatnot. It just takes some time to toughen up the gums.

Um, Im sure I've missed something - so if you have any more questions - please feel free to ask!

Edited to add- be prepared that he might vomit blood after the surgery! The excess blood drainage will probably be swallowed (avoid spitting - as it can loosen the clots in the sockets). The human stomach can hold and digest about a pint of blood - anything more - comes back up.

you should have put it in the blender and gave him his meal smoothie style.

and tell him not to be such a baby I used to paint houses and a woman had all her teeth pulled out and new one put in. She went to work 2 days later. granted she didn't do a whole lot and we told her to go home after about 3 hours because the pain was obvious but she was a trooper. oh yeah and she smoked cigarettes through her nose.

Take the opportunity to go on that juice diet you always wanted to try.. and make it the reason you just HAVE to have the newest juicer!

But I gotta tell you... juiced cantelope just is awesome... as is watermellon. Watermellon juice is big here... well.. every juice is big here.. but watermellon is my fav!

Not to sound like a freak or anything... (too late) but if you do want to go the juice route, go to a raw diet site.. (raw for people) There are many MANY juice recipes, and not all fruit.
