My husband and I might be getting a 1-year-old male EB as a foster this weekend. Neither of us have any experience with EBs, and quite frankly, I think my husband is scared of the idea of caring for such a high maintenance dog...ha! So, here are a few questions:

1. Do you have to wipe their face wrinkles every day? What do you wipe them with?

2. How often do you have to wipe/clean their butts? (My husband is very concerned about this one...haha.)

3. How often is it recommended that you bathe them?

4. Is it okay to let them play with high energy dogs, or do they overheat too quickly for that to be safe? Are they as sensitive to the cold (i.e. winters in Illinois) as they are to the heat?

I'm sure all of these vary based on the individual dog, but I'd like to get a general idea.

1- not all EB's require thier faces cleaned daily. It really depends on how deep their wrinkles are, and if they have any current/on going issues. Otherwise I would think a good wipe down once a week or every few days if they are really dirty, would be fine.
Use either non-scented baby wipes, or a clean wash cloth and warm water and soap - just be sure you get all the soap out. Dry with a clean cloth.

2-Again- not all EB's require this. This mainly depends on their tail. It they have a really tight screw tail, then you might have to wipe them down daily. They have a skin fold near their tails that can get pretty gross if it's not kept clean and dry. Baby powder is your friend as is dipaer rash cream if things start getting funky.

3-If they don't have any skin issues going on, I would think maybe once every few weeks with a good hypo-allergenic shampoo would be fine. Just be sure to rinse and dry all his folds really well! Cotton balls are your friend when it comes to face folds, ears, eyes, and getting into tight tails.

4- Yes! Just supervise so no one gets hurt or too pushy. Be sure to have pleanty of water available. EB's are fine in the cold for short periods of time. Their short muzzles dont allow for the cold air to warm enough before it goes to their lungs. So - unless it is VERY cold out, I would think short periods of outside time (like 15 min max when it's below 40) would be fine.

Im sure someone else may have more info for you - but this is just what I remember from the research I did before we got Tinkerbell.

Leeann,

I think all your questions really depend upon the EB.
I wipe the wrinkles once in the morning and once at night with just soft tp. This get the moisture of the tears out to prevent irritation. If it's been extra wet and looks a little red I put diaper rash cream in maybe 1x a week. I have never had any face wrinkle issues and Bear is going to be 2 years old.
I have to wipe their butts every time they poo. It's no big deal. They actually like it. I wipe with non-scented baby wipes and then squirt some Gold Bond powder in there to dry. No big deal if I skip a time or two.
I bath once a month. Now that it's really cold I've been holding off. No problem there either.
As far as playing with high energy dogs every EB is different as to their health and breathing conditions. Bear has no problems at all in heat. Molly has a little trouble so I watch and limit. At all times when hard playing I make sure I keep lots of ice cubes on hand for cooling. And I found a small personal fan on the floor does the trick too to cool down. You really have to get to know their breathing abilities though. I would watch closely at first.

You take great care of Bella and Remy. I don't see an EB being that big a jump for you. Who knows, maybe once you go EB youll never go back.... :D

question #1: we wipe camerons face like 1-2 times a week as she doesnt get durrty!

question #2: we wipe her vulva only as she cant reach it when she cleans herself (odd) every night we wipe that area only!

question #3: we give her a bath every 2 weeks and once a month we take her to the groomer

question #4 i can only answer for the cold, since its been as low as 15 here in raleigh and cameron had no prob!! only prob with ebs is with the cold the air when it goes to the lungs is somewhat cold as opposed to large snout dogs!!!

i have not yet experianced warm days with cameron yet!!!
also i would check inside her mouth/gum area as un eaten food will sit in there like a chipmunk (well ours does)

1. As everyone else has stated, it truly depends on the dog. I wipe Baylee's once every 1-2 weeks, and put anti-bacterial gel in them. I also put apple cider vinegar in her water which helps keep them dry. Her wrinkles/folds are not deep at all....we lucked out.

2. I've also been lucky with Baylee and have only cleaned her butt on a handful of occassions, like when she has diarrhea real bad. Other than that, I've only wiped if I smell an odor as she walks by (meaning something got stuck to the hair on the way out). I use baby wipes.

3. I still don't know an answer to that. Seeing we keep Baylee outside while we are at work, she gets stinky pretty quickly so I give her a bath every Saturday. It doesn't seem to effect her skin.

4. Depends completely on the dog. Baylee again doesn't have any problems with hot or cold. And she never gets tired, as much as we play with her and the big dog plays with her, she's still ready for more. However, I do make a point for water breaks....after hearing all the problems, it freaks me out, so I make her stop and drink.

Again, I've been lucky with her and hope to remain lucky. You should definitely foster, and posts pictures.

Thank you all for answering my questions! I just found out today that the EB went to another foster home (foster-to-adopt, actually...keep your fingers crossed for him!) I'm not sure if I'll ever get another opportunity to foster an EB, but I appreciate you all taking the time to answer my questions.
