While cruising CL I found a new source. $0.22 per pound whole chicken backs and necks. Ground backs and necks @ $0.18 a pound. 1 day turn around on orders and they can handle a several hundred pound order.

So I gave the dogs all RMB's last night. They LOVED them of course..

Well Havoc.. he is more powerful a chewer than Bauer.. and literally devoured the bone.. there was just a small fist sized piece left.. I'm assuming this is Ok for him..

Bauer has only ever chewed it.. and got most of the marrow and a small part of bone.. Havoc does have the poops with a bit of blood.. which I'm not too concerned as of yet.. but wow.. that dog LOVES his RMB's...

Wish I had more time and not as lazy and could get all the dogs on a raw food diet..

I guess I could get all grounded up meat and then give the dogs a RMB every second day right? Might not be that hard if I do it that way.. make sure to give them tripe and organ meat every third day or so?

What do you guys think of that?? I don't want to buy pre-made stuff.. as that can get reallly expensive!

My dogs get a beef rib every morning whether it is raw day or kibble day. They eat most if not ALL of the bone. If they eat to large of bone piece they either throw it up or it passes in a large piece.
I prepare and portion everything raw on Sunday and freeze. I set the next days meal in refrig to thaw in the evening. Not much time involved really once you get a system going.
I feed both raw and kibble...........it depends on my mood and sales :)

My parents feed raw for the most part. Luckily my dad is a chef so when he goes to clean the meat and prep it for the dinner that night he takes the scraps and puts it in the "Lunch pail" whats the best is the other men that work there do the same when they prep the meat the do the same for my dad to take to Sally. She is so spoiled.

Score!!!! 165 pounds of raw @ $65.00 what's that like $0.40 a pound. You can save the applause, I'll graciously accept monetary compensation for my prowess as a price conscience shopper. Oh yea no coupons either!

Great price!
Actually the break down goes like this:
150 pounds of whole ground chicken @ $0.22 per pound
15 pounds beef (stew meat) @ $0.75 per pound
$20.00 for my share of the fuel cost
I found a source that is cheap, it's only chicken but nothing costs over $0.40 per pound. The problem, isn't there always a problem. The plant is about three hours away and my work schedule doesn't coincide with their hours of operation. So I shared my source with a raw seller that can get there, I share gas expenses to get the actual price rather than their mark up.

Of course.. always a problem... I don't think I could find anything like that price here.. well I haven't looked hard.. but its so pricey up here to find cheap food to use as raw.

I might have to start looking around.. cause I do want to get my dogs on a partial raw diet.. since Bauer did awesome on it!

I am seriously thinking of switching,

We had kind of an incident today (although probably not kibble related) but horse got really sick (vomiting) and we had to go to the vet for subQ fluids and injections of medication. We think he either got into something or it was the new chews that I gave him yesterday... "veggie chews"

Horse has caught a few baby rabbits (and eaten them whole) over the past month, and I know I can get fresh whole rabbit from a local farmers market.

Problem is I have a thing with touching raw meat, I don't like it. But I think I am going to have to get over it and finally make the switch.

So if my reading has done me well we are talking about a 1/1/8/ ratio of organ/bone/muscle.

Best source of organ is liver.

If stool is soft increase bone if stool is powdery increase muscle and tailor feeding to dogs body condition.

Nothing too small or too large (ie chicken wings or weight bearing beef bones)

And switch them over after a 12 hour fast (for puppies) and don't turn back or switch between raw and kibble....

right lol?

You have the basics..............

I feed raw and kibble at the same meal. Maybe one day raw , next day kibble. It mostly depends on your dog, how well they handle mixing it up.

You may be more comfortable feeding frozen or partially frozen if raw grosses you out. My dogs get lots of frozen during the summer and it makes them slow down and chew their food. Helps with teeth cleaning from the chewing.

If I feed thawed meat, they just chomp and swallow. Very little chewing. Most teeth cleaning benefits come from raw meaty bones.

Added bonus..........picking up the poop is easy......dry and dusty NO SMELL!!!!

if you are not experienced in feeding raw, i would recommend waiting till he's like 8-12 months old before switching over completely. Puppies need proper nutrition and are very susceptible to problems if not given correctly.
I would do half raw/half kibble until then. Like just giving a chicken quarter every morning or every other morning.

Plus you need more than liver as organ, like kidneys too. 10% of diet is organ and only half can come from liver as too much is toxic.
so it's 80% muscle, 10% RMB and 10% organ.
and puppies need 10% of body weight a day. I feed Lo all she could eat twice a day until she was 4 months old then 10% body weight until she was a year. then i eased back into giving her 2% of projected adult weight.

oh and i also HIGHLY recommend latex gloves!!!!!!! i hate touching raw meat too, not b/c it grosses me out, I just dont like having to wash all the goop off. Plus i hand fed her b/c i wanted her to learn not to gulp.

NEEDLE PUPPY TEETH! lol

The patties were like triple what I'm paying now, I looked into primal and Stella and chewys
. And for dogs w yeast problems, they suggest not feeding cooked foods. I'm seriously thinking about switching to all raw. I know mike pays less than I am now for kibble, so it may even save me money. As soon as this semester is over, I'm going to sit down and figure out the logistics of it all.

Well we started 3 days ago and I am glad we did, he looks better already and energy is up for sure.

Just bone in chicken for now and seems to be ok, me on the other hand watching him pretty much crunch twice and then swallow the bones has me cringing but I know its ok, I just have to get used to it.

The bugger keeps catching wild animals in the back yard, yesterday he caught another (the third one this summer) baby rabbit and then a mouse and of course ate them both and puked up the mouse bones/fur last night... it was nasty.

Horse is very lean, always has been, when I was feeding kibble I always overfed a little because he was so lean/active, but according to the charts I should be feeding 1.2 pounds per day (if I estimate his adult weight at 60 pounds) should I up that a little now or just leave it as he is just starting out?

BTW his poops have been fine, he has only vomited the mouse and I am glad he did lol.
