How long have you been doing it thus far?
So it IS the chicken. He has been pooping out more bones, some are fairly thick and sharp. I think I am going to kick the raw diet. Maybe once we move and have settled and I get a good job there I will do the barf diet but right now I am not happy enough with raw, I don't want to think about how those bones can hurt him on the inside. The only benefit is smaller poop so far. I have noticed the other changes to be minimal. So with that I am only going to supplement his diet like I used to. If you can give me good advice not to I am open to it. I don't like what's in commercial dog food but I can afford prepared raw with good bones and ect. Sad. I was really hoping this would wok. Maybe we'll have better luck another time.
Sorry to hear that raw feeding didn't work out with you, so far I am still hanging on ;)
I am going to start bronson on raw at the beggining of the month so i will keep you updated, interesting to read abuot the chicken bones i will look out for that one as that will be what he eats most of.
I'm thinking of starting Shelby on a raw diet or half raw diet starting this winter. I think she would really benefit from it with her skin issues.

His Hudson swallowing and not chewing chicken bones up? Dude will get constipated if I give him too much bones; turkey neck and drumsticks.
If the bones concern you maybe you should try FISH. Most of us know someone who fishes so its FREE!!!!!!! Just slice the gut and check for hooks and remove any dangerous spine or fins.

When I can not get fresh/frozen fish I feed canned tuna or mackerel.
Yes he chews the chicken well. I watch him. Apparently any piece that he doesn't crush doesn't digest right. We still have a bunch left so he is doing 50/50 now.

Unfort I don't know anyone who fishes :( may have to start myself.
Tina, I joined a dog food forum and many have said that the bone shards disappear after about 3 months. They also said you can take a hammer and crush the bones up first for awhile until the dogs tummy figures out how to digest it properly.
Interesting. He digested it fine until recently, unless I didn't notice it before but I'm gross and always check their poop haha. He is doing 50/50 now, since we are moving in a month and will be on the road for two weeks then doing work in our home I'm going to keep doing this so he can eat kibble during the move. I don't want to manage frozen meat on a road trip in a moving truck accross country haha
dogs don't actually chew up their food not in the sense we do. they break the bones so they can swallow them..if there is bone in the stool you are feeding too much bone. I was having this problem with Bones he was barfing them up, so I started boning out the leg bone of the chicken quarters and now he is doing just fine. Oh and Tina..Bones did well with the whole quarter for a long time then started barfing out bone he couldn't digest thats when I started giving him less.
I've never seen chunks of bone in my dogs poop but I have noticed they will almost always puke up any cartilage they ingest. Not sure why.

Thats a good point. I think his metabolism has finally begun to slow down so that would make sense. I will try pulling out the large bone before feeding and see how that goes. Thanks.
If your seeing bones in poop than I suggest supplement with digestive enzymes and probiotic for a few weeks Dogs that have only had kibble often do not have the digestive enzymes needed to digest the bone properly their system needs time to create this.
Thanks! I do give him plain yogurt sometimes, but I'll look into supplements as well.
The probiotics especially the enterically coated refrigerated ones would be my first choice to help the system for a few weeks and yogurt really would have to be fed in large quantities to do anything, the quality of yogurt at the grocery store would have minimal good stuff lol. Kefir would be a better alternative to yogurt by far.
Well im diving in to the raw next month once bronsons kibble finishes, i have given him a taste of all of the possible raw meals he may come across and all have gone down fine, i want to make patties for him as is a lot easier for me, the base of meals will be chicken legs/thighs is it ok to grind these up with the bones ?

His meals will be something along the lines of the below:

week 1 - chicken, veg, flax seed oil, cod liver oil.

week 2 - chicken, venison, veg, flax seed oil, cod liver oil.

week 3 - chicken, fish, veg, flax seed oil, cod liver oil.

week 4 - chicken, beef, veg, flax seed oil, cod liver oil.

this will be for 6 days of the week on the last day of the week he will get raw meaty bones such as a small set of ribs.

obviously all of the above will be in the appropriate portions, does this sound ok for the patties anything else i could add which would be of benefit ?

Chewing the bone is good for the jaw. I would hold the chicken at first and teach him to use his back teeth to chew. If he can then no need to grind it. He'll do it :) also, no need to add veg. His poop will be too hard to chalky if there is too much bone in his diet. Don't forget 10% has to be organ as well. Hudson loves the liver and hearts. It's really bloody so he licks up all the blood too... Ew. I don't know if it's true but I've read from multiple raw resources that feeding too much liver can be toxic. So just in case I only give it every coupl weeks. Although I haven't come across any in a month and a half.
Thanks Tina shall try that and see how it goes, as i know he likes to just swallow most stuff up without chewing to much even if it is twice the size of his head :D
Frozen or partially frozen will also cause them to chew the meat in stead of just swallowing it whole :)

Also feeding larger pieces like chicken quarters or turkey legs or wings will slow them down.
