Duke does not really lick his paws as some of the previous postings were talking about excessive licking and redness BUT in between his paws are red tonight? Any idea what this could be? also should I put anything on it?

3:45 pm Friday : update *** and question on Medicine

ok, so my vet just called back. Duke still has the red between the paws and also has a hot spot we just noticed on the top of his head. the vet wants me to administer benadryl. I have never given this to Duke before. he wants me to give this to Duke for 48 hours and call him on Monday and let him know if the scratching has stopped and the redness/ swelling has gone down.

My question is he told me to give 25 MG of benadryl but everything I read says 1 mg per pound and Duke weighs almost 60 pounds?? anyone have any thoughts on this.. My vets office just closed..

Please share that info for us. I would like to read it. Might be helpful thanks.
Here you go .. this is the article .. really good info. We are going to try soaking his paws tonight in epsom salt. Seems like alot of owners have had success with this. its funny it is on both paws but in the same spot on each?? not the entire paw.. and does look a little swollen??

soundass like allergies, You can soak them in epson salt. or go to the vet and get malasab shampoo or whipes.
I have always used the malaseb wipes for his wrinkles. I just purchased the malaseb shampoo. Can you use this shampoo for all baths or just when having issues like the red paws?

ugh i misread what you said. for a min there i thought u were talking about the epson salts!

do you have a link for the shampoo?

1 mg per pound is pretty standard. They probably want you to try the lesser dose so go ahead and try it. If it doesn't seem to be giving relief then add the extra dosage. As you know it might make him sleep so don't be surprised if it does. One of my friends who is a pharmacist always uses benadryl as a sleep aid.

Oops.. almost forgot to send good wishes that Duke feels better real soon and this clears up.
