max thinks hes a camel.i have one of those automatic water dispensers that holds at least a gallon and a half. i have seen him drink at least a third of it in one shot, but then it comes right back up. so we watch him and make sure he takes a break every couple secs. i also think hes getting to much air in - as his water bowl is not elevated. any thoughts on the elevated water bowl?
I don't know about anyone else but I like the elevated bowls. I have both Prince's bowls elevated in one of those little plastic stands and he seems a lot more comfortable now. He's not all hunched over and it seems to help with his food intake. He used to choke alot and maybe it was from him eating too fast but it's also gotten better since I lifted his bowls up.

I know with my own dogs.. especially as puppies.. when they eat.. I offer them water then take up the bowl. Cause all of my pups would just sit there and gorge themselves on water.

If its a hot day or they have had lots of exercise.. then I make sure they get good amounts of water.

I also add water to their food.. has been a big help with my chihuahua who just eats her kibble whole!

That's how I regulate water in my house!

Make sense?

Yep.. pretty much how I do it.

Unless we are outside.. and if they are running and playing like crazy.. I always keep fresh water on hand for them. Never want them to get dehydrated

When they get older I can keep water out for them.. cause they don't tend to gorge themselves as much anymore.

I used limit the amount of water in the bowl. Yes, it took dedication but this way they don't over drink or drink too fast. Also for the pups that gulp their food down, you may try hand feeding or get a food dispenser that they have to figure out how to get the food to dispense out. It offers great mental simulation also.

How exactly do you regulate water when using dishes. Like do you only allow them to drink at feedng times? I don't quite understand. Please help clear my mind! Thank you
Do you have something to drink sitting in front of you 24 hrs per day? I don't think anyone does. It just comes down to common sense. I don't leave water constantly available to puppies unless they are left outside in the kennel run for the day, where they can urinate whenever they need to. When inside I offer it periodically when I see fit otherwise they tend to over drink out of boredom or habit which can interfere with housebreaking. Once they are out of puppyhood I will keep the water down unless I start seeing them drinking it just because it is there. I have noticed that sometimes even my adult dogs drink water out of habit or boredom as well. It won't kill a dog to go a few hours without drinking when they are inside a climate controlled home holding up the couch.

Okay. I just didn't know how much was enough. I've never owned a puppy before so I was just wondering. Thank you for the input. I do pretty much have a bottle of water 24/7 lol... workout in am and pm..gotta keep hydrated...I drink water all day and milk before bed lol. I was just thinking maybe a growing pup would need the same but I noticed today alone with regulating the water house training has went much better!

My dogs all drink out of water bottles like the ones made for rodents. The ones that I have are just nozzles that you put on the end of a 2L pop bottle, they lick it to get water. I was having problems with my foster dogs gulping too much water and then puking it all up or knocking water dishes over. I have the water bottles attached to their crates and leave the doors open when they aren't in there, they can go in and drink when they want to and it's hard for them to over drink.

This is similar to one that I have, but the others are just 2L bottles with the attachment on the bottom.
have been considering getting one of these cuz everytime my EB drinks water he walks around in 16413211940 circles and get the water everywhere!!! do you all think this will help with the water hanging from him mouth? we usually have to stop what we are doing while at home just to wipe his mouth.
btw not really a big deal to get up and wipe his mouth cuz we don't leave it out 24/7...only sometimes... but when we are not at home i would like to try this.

I don't think that'll help haha. Water will get stuck in between their lips regardless. I just put water down when the dog asks (he will face smash the bowl) or when I have noticed he hasn't drank in a while or seems thirsty. I put a towel under him to catch the water and wipe his face if I am there. Outside I leave the bowl, since he can just pee if he has too much.
