As many of you might know, my mother is visually impaired. Her immune system has too many white blood cells and they started attacking her healthy organs. Instead of developing leukemia or Hodgkins(sp), her white bloods cells attacked her retina causing her to lose her vision. She has glaucoma and cataracts(sp) on top of that.

For the time being, she still has about 20% of her vision and gets around moderately ok. She can still read with the help of her CCTV and a magnifying glass that is 16x. My question is this: Do you think an APBT could be trained to be a seeing eye dog? She lives in an apartment and doesn't have room for a lab, plus she's not a big fan of them. Haus is the right size for her apartment, and my mother LOVES pitbulls. There are two that live down the hall from her that she always refers to as "the boys."

Do you think this is possible, or am I off my rocker?

I'm editting this for clarity. Haus would NOT be trained to be her seeing eye dog, I was just using him as an example.

Thanks wizworx! I saw that, but it didn't mention a seeing eye dog. I don't know, just was curious. My mother is just as stubborn if not more than I am. She still refuses to use her cane. :roll:

Yes, Helen Keller's dog was a Pit. I would think that a Pit would be a great service dog! They are intelligent (well, most of them anyway :wink: ), they are strong enough to pull a person out of harms way if need be, and they love their people.

OT... hausmommy, where did you find find a 16X magnifier? My granddad has bad macular degeneration, and really misses reading his books or anything for that matter...We can't seem to find anything strong enough for him.

My mother got hers from the School for the Blind here in Illinois. I'll ask her and let you know more specifically.
