I'm wondering what everyone thinks about fish for puppies? Coco had her first shots recently and the very young vet asked what I was feeding her. We had been giving her a little biodynamic plain yogurt daily and every once in a while poached fish and poached egg. She was adamant "high quality puppy food and nothing else". I felt totally vindicated in ignoring her advice when she said 12 wk old puppies need to be fed just twice a day. We never discussed how much food, just how many times which I thought was silly. But.... I could be totally wrong!

We do a fair bit of fishing. All the big dogs eat bloodlines when we are filleting fish. We can't afford expensive fancy food but we can supplement with things like fish, eggs, yogurt, etc and always have. The only thing I'm worried about is that Coco may develop hip problems if she gets too much protein.

So what say you guys? Can I give her fish? And how much how often?

Thanks,, Ann

I thought puppies would need three times a day as well. We are continuing a three time a day regime.
I had booked the appointment so that my son could be there and hear what the vet had to say. It sort of backfired as I then told him we would be ignoring a large portion of it lol. Next set of shots I'll book in with one of the more senior vets.

And thank you both I can't see how a bowl of kibble would be more nutritious than a piece of fish in moderation. My main worry was too much protein would be bad for a big breed puppy. But on my net research today I found it's actually a good protein source low in calories. Apparently, if you freeze fish for a week it kills all parasites which means I can sometimes give it to her raw.

Gotta love these petfood companies getting into the ears of vets!

Cheers, Ann

Thanks for the article. Organ meat was something else I was interested in. Our big dogs get it but I wasn't sure about feeding it to Coco. Now that she's at the 3 month mark I'm not so worried. Our local butcher slaughters his own cows and processes on site, sells cheap pet mince that is mostly organ meat and I buy a bit every once in a while for the girls.
