I leave Ana and Daisy in their separate crates when I go out. When I get home they hear me opening the gate to the backyard and opening the mailbox, and they both go NUTS. Ana yelps and bashes herself against the crate so hard/loud that I can hear her before even coming inside the house. I know my neighbours must be going insane! I can't stand it.

So now, I've started covering her crate with a blanket, but it's not really working. I also ignore her and leave her in the crate for about 15-20 minutes to let her calm down and so that *hopefully* she'll stop associating the sound of the gate and mailbox with "party time".

Any tips to help get my puppy some manners? Or will she just grow out of it after a while?

Our guys still get excited when we get home, they love us!
We ignore them until they can calm down. They smack their tails on the crates so loud I cannot hear anything else when I open the door! I found that ignoring them until they're quiet works for us.

It will take time, especially for a puppy if this is the method you want to try. You have to be consistent with it!

I agree. I just ignore Zeus. I don't make a big deal when I come home so he doesn't get too excited. He will actually wait quietly untill I let him out of his cage. His was a bit nuts when he was younger but following these steps worked, he is now 1yo. P.S. Cute pic.

I don't have the heart to ignore 'em...if my neighbours get pissed f%@$ it, I don't care, it is only a little bit of commotion for like a couple minutes anyway!

I had that same problem not too long ago, heck my girl is only 5 months old. And I tried ignoring he until she calmed down, but she's a bit sassy so she'd just start barking at me and when she'd actually calm down once I went to open the crate she'd go nuts again. So instead when I walk in the house I tell her HOLD ON or WAIT, I'd go do whatever I needed to do first (tend to the kids or even just go sit down for 2 - 5 minutes out of sight, when I came back into the room I'd say RELAX if she started to get all wound up. In fact I use RELAX for whenever she starts getting crazy, in or out of her crate. Now she still gets happy, wags her tail but she is starting to understand that I don't like a lot of noise or commotion so she kinda just sits patiently and waits. But we're still working on the aftermath of when, as my kids call it "I release the Beast!". At that point she gets one warning to stop jumping on the kids and what-not otherwise she goes right back in the crate for another 5 minutes or so. It's all about consistency.

fuzytech, I agree with your methods but I was always told not to use the cage for disaplin. It is there home when you aren't home.

Their crates are suppossed to be a "happy" place, not punishment. If the crate is used for punishment, they will think they're in trouble every time you put them in it. Our guys will sometimes lay in their crates just because....it's got big fluffy warm blankets, I don't blame 'em!
