My older sister just gave me her 10 week old APBT puppy named Magic(Her name will be changed soon). She called me very upset and heartbroken. Her landlord told her she could have the puppy but after 2 weeks the landlord decided she didnt want to put up a fence for the backyard and told her she has to get rid of the dog! When I picked Magic up tonight of course my sister cried so hard! Her kids father(who took Magic during the day while my sister's at work. And brings her back when it's time for him to go to work) told me that she's very nervous around men(because my uncle was going to take Magic) because he "spanks" her when she's "bad"  . Why in the he!! would someone spank a dog let alone a 10 week old puppy! I had to keep my composure b/c my nieces and nephews were running around. I'm assuming my sister didnt know it b/c of the look she gave him.
Well anyway I've never had a dog or a puppy that was very submissive. She seems like she doesnt really have that much self confidence. And is not puppy like not from what I can see so far. What can I do to give her a boost? My sister told me she doesnt walk on a leash. Well I took her out for a short walk around the yard. And she didnt like it at first but then walked on it and ran. My sister also told me Magic has never been crated but I havent heard a peep out of her since I put her in one.
I'm not sure what I can do to boost her confidence. Any suggestions? Also Legend seen her and was fine but the minute he heard my GSD barking at her (from upstairs) he then wanted nothing to do with her. He's very friendly with other dogs. But he's never been around anything less than the size of a Boston Terrier(20lbs-30lbs. at least). Should I keep him away from each other until she grows some?

Well I am not sure - but we just got a shy puppy into our rescue and my 11yr. old immediately picked her up and carried her all over, letting her sit on her bed and play in her room all evening (after liberal potty breaks!) and today she's a different dog!!!
Just outgoing and no sign of shyness at all! This puppy about the same age as your puppy, so I know there's hope! :)

Okay :D She lets you pick her up. She wags her tail and gives you kisses as long as you approach her very slowly. She didnt try to investigate like most pups. She just laid down on the floor. Hopefully she'll show me her true side tomorrow. I am worried about her.

Because of the previous treatment, she may always carry those memories,
but you can build up her confidence with lots of love, hugs and "good Girl's".
She will get comfortable in your house in about a week and then it will take
time for her to learn that she is not going to get hit. When Clara came to us,
you could tell that someone use to chase her and hit her. To this day she will
still jump up and move to a comfort spot when anyone gets up out of a chair
as if she wants to make sure she will not be gotten by someone. We have had
her for a year and a half. However, you can tell she is a happy dog and full of
love and life and always comes when called with a wagging tail. I believe she will
carry her previous memories with her, but knows we love her.

YEP TLC yet firm boundaries, use a crate when she's not being supervised! And if you have an 11yr. old, let her tote the puppy from hell to breakfast all day long when she can ;)

Alot of people confuse scared and shy. If she's just scared or nervous, that will all go away once the pup gets a comfort level with her new family and surroundings. My Maxi was considered "shy" by the HS where I rescued her. After 2 days in her new home, she was hell on 4 legs

She's doing a little better today. She went for a quick 2 block walk she ran wagged her tail and played. She went outside and got to play with a pitbull puppy around the same age as her. And once all their ahots are done they will have playdates. Its Legend's twin sister's brother Cannon. So when Legend and Karma play Cannon and Magic can play together. She doesnt have any problems with kids at all. Maybe I can borrow my cousin this weekend and let him spoil her! lol :D
