We found a lump...

We found a lump between Honey's neck and shoulder. She went to the vet today and the vet stuck a needle in it and put the cells on a slide. she said the lump is a mass cell tumor (sp?). Honey is having surgery on Tues. morning to remove the lump. This just after my Rhodesian, Butch, had surgery last week to remove two growths in his mouth on his gumline. This has a been an expensive and crazy month. It seems we've been spending every week at the vet's...oh wait we have!

We havent gotten the results back on Butch's growth yet. We're crossing our fingers that it's not a epulis. And hopefully Honey's surgery goes well and they can remove the whole tumor and she wont have any more.

I'm sorry to hear of all your bad luck! I wish you the best of luck for both of them! :D
Our three older dogs have gotten these. We have had two removed that interfered
with Sasha's walking. Sasha was the first to come down with these and that was
over 4 years ago. Just seems to be a common problem for dogs.

p.s. what vet are you using? We are used Shane Burkhead at the North Florida Animal
Hospital to remove the second tumor. It wasn't cheap but it was very good. On the first tumor, after it was removed we put Sasha on the "Navy Protocol" to kill any cancerous cells from getting into her major organs.
We use Novey Animal Hospital. Dr. Justice did the surgery on Butch and she will be operating on Honey on Tuesday. Our dogs love her. And she explained everything that she will be doing and what it is and everything. She's really good and really puts you at ease. I'll still worry of course!
Are these the same as "fatty tumors"? Sophie's got a ton of these - the only one we're worried about is the one under her arm. :(

Good luck to both your babies. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for both.
I have had dogs with tumors and as scary as it is she should be alright. I will keep my fingers crossed.

No actually the fatty tumors are harmless unless they're in a bad spot. Butch has one of these on his leg. then they need to be removed. the mast cell tumors are bad, they're a form of cancer. they can spread and do damage to the organs. hopefully the one Honey has is benign. we're hoping. she has a bunch of skin right there on her neck, so the vet said it wont be a problem hopefully to remove it and some of the surrounding tissue.
Awww, man! Poor Harley. :( I'll definitely keep my fingers crossed for her.
Ok, well the vet called. Butch's results have come back, the growths that were removed are epulis. she just said that for now, we'll just have to watch him to make sure he doesnt form any new growths. if he does, she may have to remove some of his teeth. poor boy. but we're hoping he wont grow any more in his mouth.

Honey's pre-op blood work came back. she's ok for surgery. but get this...she has high cholesterol! i didnt know dogs could have high cholesterol. the vet said it isnt anything to worry about.
well, fingers crossed that the tumour is benign! Stressful few weeks it sounds like!

So, Tyger9791, I have a question for you. I was walking Kendra earlier today, for about an hour, and when we got done I put her in the car and we started driving home. Well she was SO tired on the way back that she was laying down in the back seat on HER left side. Well I was resting my arm on her and rubbing her back and I felt a lump and I immediatly started worrying and I have been ever since so I jumped on here and searched for lumps and found your thread and thought that I NEEDED to talk to you.
The lump I found on Kendra is on her BACK, 2 inches abover her back leg. To be completely honest, it feels like a knot. When I say knot I mean a knot like we humans get in our muscles from working out too much or hard. It is ALSO kind of small too, about the size of a nickle. So I was wondering and wanted to ask you......Is that how the lump on your dog felt!?!?!?

Thank you, i'm not trying to steal your thread, but just had to ask you, thanks again.

Thank you for the support! Actualy, I feel A LOT better. I found another thread on lumps and checked it out. I found that someone else's dog got a lump from it's vaccinations so I checked her vet record. I keep a copy of EVERYTHING that is put in her record at the vet's office at home. I took her to get her 3 year rabies vaccination on the 20th, nine days ago. I normaly ALWAYS take her to her vet to get everything done, regardless, but this time I didn't. The local Humane Society in my city had a clinic for rabies vaccinations and city licens tags. Well it was a little early for her as she was due in July for her rabies booster, but it doesn't matter that close and it was ONLY $6.00 for the 3 year booster so I got it done and the lump is DIRECTLY in the SAME location that they gave her the 3 year rabies booster so i'm pretty sure that is what it is from.
I got in touch with my vet tonight and it is deffinantly a really good possibility that it was caused from the vaccine, but to just keep an eye on it and if it doesn't go away in a week or gets bigger by then to bring her in for some tests so i'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying for her and I again, appreciate the support!
Thanks,

Keeping my fingers crossed and prayers said that all goes well. Keep us informed on how Honey is doing.
Give her hugs.

Sorry to hear the bad news :cry..............Not to scare anyone, but one of my friends has a dog that gets the lumps the DOc said he thought it was harmless until he realized on a different patient that the lumps can grow in more then out causing other more serious problems..The Doc has been in practice for years and has only seen it on one patient so it is rare but something that i would inquire about :

No, not to scare anyone at all. Thank you for bringing that up! I know this isn't MY THREAD, but if Kendra's lump DOESN'T go away, and I go to the vet about it, I will DEFFINANTLY bring that up to my Vet! Anything is possible and I NEVER thought about lump's growing INWARD as apposed to OUTWARD, but it is deffinantly possible! Thanks for the post, again, this isn't MY THREAD, but anybody would learn more by reading this post and someone could be dealing with "lumps" right now, but they are waiting to say anything to see if they go away or not and maybe this post will get them to the vet SOONER and could possibly save a Pits life! You never know! Thanks again for the post about them growing inward as apposed to outward! Thanks!
definitely take your dog to the vet to get it looked at if it doesnt go away on its own. lumps can be anything. our vet just stuck a needle in it and got a sample. she then put it on a slide and took a look at the cells under a microscope. it only took her a few minutes.
when we took Honey home, we had to give her benadryl. the mast cell tumors release histamines when they get poked and the lump grew to the size of an orange! the benadryl shrunk the lump back down to it's original size. we continued to give her benadryl for 72 hrs after the vet did the needle aspirate.
Honey's lump feels hard but it moves around. hers is about the size of a golf ball. but like the vet said, what we can feel may be only the tip of the iceburg, so to speak. so we're not exactly sure how big it truly is. the vet is going to remove the lump and a few centimeters of surrounding tissue.
Honey is at the vet now. hopefully we'll know later this afternoon how it goes.

Wow! Yeah I am deffinantly going to take her to the vet if it doesn't go away in a week like they told me to do. It's kind of a personal question so if you don't want to answer then I understand, but what did the needle aspirate cost??
What did the surgery cost to remove the lump and a few centimeters of surrounding tissue??

Thank you again,
prepare for a bit of sticker shock....
i believe the actual needle aspirate was only around $20.
BUT...
after everything...we nearly spent $400. the biggest expense was the anesthesia. Honey was under for over an hour. that came to $200 just for the anesthesia.
and the lump was big. her incision is a little over 4 inches. her entire shoulder is shaved and she looks like frankenstein. poor baby. we cant wrap it up. it has to stay uncovered. but the vet said we can put neosporin on it to help it heal. she has to stay separated from our other dogs. i told my other dogs that they cant get sick again for awhile, we're running out of rooms, crates, and money! bad enough i have to keep Luchi and the cat locked up in separate rooms when we're away at work. now we have to lock up Honey too. so they dont accidently tear her stitches out.
but she's doing ok. she slept most of yesterday and the others are leaving her alone.
